Disordered Eating, A Path of Self-Discovery
There are many approaches to healing from disordered eating, negative body image, and anxiety around your relationship with food. Mainly, whatever works for each individual person is what is helpful and relevant. Though respectful of all healing efforts, my experience and training steers me towards an approach that is both embodied and rooted in moving from self-abuse to self-love.
Some of the tools I help clients discover and utilize towards their well-being include such practices as intuitive eating, making peace with one's body and one's emotions, spiritual exploration, EMDR, somatic (body) awareness, creative expression, and critical thinking about the messages received from the culture-at-large.
One of the most important things to know while entering or continuing a path towards healing is that it is possible to heal, and to heal completely.
Another important thing to realize is that it's not about food. It's about, well, everything else! Feelings, thoughts, families of origin, relationship struggles, isolation, fears, traumas, the cultural "downloads" we all receive on a daily basis that pigeon-hole us into expected ways of looking, being, and feeling. In this sense, the eating disorder behaviors are an attempt by the soul to free you from restrictions that no longer serve. Turning to food and the eating disorder tboughts and behavior is a way to cope with overwhelming feelings and experiences. This strategy works for a while; but one day, what once offered relief becomes a restrictive cage. Though afraid, you long for a way out. Healing involves the mystery and magic of uncovering who you really are.
Please note: you must be physically stable to participate in outpatient individual psychotherapy. I am only able to offer treatment to individuals who are physically stable and safe in their bodies.
